    ABOUT SYRIA

"Ahlan Wa Sahlan" – "welcome to Syria"; With these words Syrian people welcome their visitors.

Syria is often described as the largest small country in the world because of its wealth of ancient civilizations. Modern man is indebted to this land for much of his thought and learning. Therefore it is properly said that every cultured man belongs to two nations -his own and Syria

The strategic importance of Syria is due to its unique position at the meeting point of three continents Asia, Africa and Europe, and at the crossroads between the Gaspian see, the Balck sea, the Indian ocean and the Nile. The Silk Road led from China to Doura-Europos (Salhieh), from Palmyra, and Homs to Syria's coastal ports on the Mediterranean. This geographical position lent distinction to the country, not only as a trade and caravan route but also as a melting-pot of ideas, beliefs and talents.

Damascus is the oldest inhabited capital in the world and is often described as the cradle of civilization since many of the great human achievements had their beginnings in ancient Syria and spread to encompass the world.

Damascus is Syria's administrative and business capital, while Aleppo and Lattakia are Syria's industrial and commercial centers. Other major cities include Homs, Deir Ezzor,Idleb, Tartous and Hama.

Syrians are well-educated, with literacy rates of 93% and 78% for males and females respectively. Syrians are friendly, open minded, helpful and particularly proud of their culture, their history and of the peaceful coexistence of the many religious and ethnic groups within their country.

Ever since ancient times, a visitor's experience of Syria has been of one of the most fascinating and beautiful destinations in the world.

For those who haven’t been to Damascus we chose this poem by the Syrian, diplomat and poet Nizar kabbani :

Damascus..  What are you doing to meUmayad Mosque Courtyard

I enter the courtyard of the Umayyad Mosque
    And greet everyone in it
    Corner to . . . corner
    Tile to . . . tile
    Dove to . . . dove
I wander in the gardens of Kufi script
And pluck beautiful flowers of God’s words
And hear with my eye the voice of the mosaics
And the music of agate prayer beads
A state of revelation and rapture overtakes me,
So I climb the steps of the first minaret that encounters me
    Damascene House
    Calling:
    “Come to the jasmine”
    “Come to the jasmine”

     The Damascene House
    Is beyond the architectural text
The design of our homes . . .
Is based on an emotional foundation
For every house leans . . . on the hip of another
    And every balcony . . .
Extends its hand to another facing it
Damascene houses are loving houses . . .
They greet one another in the morning . . .
    And exchange visits . . .
    Secretly—at night . . .
